Sydney Arthur Fisher

Fisher, Sydney Arthur (1850-1921), minister of agriculture for Canada (1896-1911), was born in Montreal, Lower Canada, on June 12, 1850, the son of Arthur Fisher, M.D., and Susanna Corse. He was educated at McGill University and at Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A., 1871), and devoted himself to scientific farming in the Eastern townships of Quebec. He represented Brome as a Liberal in the Canadian House of Commons from 1882 to 1891, and from 1896 to 1911; and from 1896 to 1911 he was minister of agriculture in the Laurier government. He was defeated in the general elections of 1911, and in a bye-election in Chateauguay in 1913, and he thereupon retired to private life. He died at Ottawa on April 9, 1921. He was unmarried.
