Sir Robert Shore Milnes

Milnes, Sir Robert Shore, Bart. (1746-1837), lieutenant-governor of Lower Canada (1797-1808), was born in England in 1746, the son of John Milnes of Wakefield. He obtained a commission in the Royal Horse Guards; and in 1795 he was appointed governor of Martinique. In 1797 he came to Canada as lieutenant-governor of Lower Canada, and from 1799 to 1805 he was administrator of the government. He returned to England in 1805, and he ceased to be lieutenant-governor of Lower Canada in 1808. He died in 1837. In 1801 he was created a baronet of the United Kingdom.
