Sir George Airey Kirkpatrick

 

Kirkpatrick, Sir George Airey (1841-1899), lieutenant-governor of Ontario (1892-7), was born at Kingston, Upper Canada, on September 13, 1841, the son of Thomas Kirkpatrick and Helen, daughter of Alexander Fisher. He was educated at the grammar school in Kingston, at the high school in St. Johns, Lower Canada, and at Trinity College, Dublin (B.A., and LL.B., 1861). He was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1865.(Q.C., 1880); and in 1870 he was elected to succeed his father in the representation of the county of Frontenac in the Canadian House of Commons. This seat he retained without interruption until his appointment as lieutenant-governor of Ontario in 1892. His term of office expired in 1897 ; and he died at Toronto, Ontario, after a long illness, on December 13, 1899. He was twice married, (1) in 1865 to Frances Jane (d. 1877), daughter of the Hon. John Macaulay of Kingston ; and (2) in 1883 to Isabel Louise, daughter of Sir David Lewis Macpherson. By his first wife he.had four sons and one daughter; and by his second wife one son. He was created a K.C.M.G. in 1897.
