Ross Cuthbert

Cuthbert, Ross (1776-1861), executive councillor of Lower Canada (1812-41), was born on February 17, 1776, the second son of James Cuthbert the elder. He was educated at the College of Douai, in France ; and he inherited from his father the seigniory of Lanoraie and Dautray. He was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1803, and practiced law in Quebec. In 1812 he was sworn of the Executive . Council, and he held his seat m the Council until 1841. From 1800 to 1810, from 1812 to 1816, and again in 1820, he also represented Warwick in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada, and during the years 1812-16 he was the spokesman of the government on the floor of the House. He was the author of three early items in Canadian literature, L'Aréopage (Quebec, 1803), An apology for Great Britain (Quebec, 1809), and New theory of the tides (Quebec, 1810). He died on August 28, 1861.
