Major Robert Louis Calder, M.C.

Advocate, of Bercovitch & Calder, 260 St. James Street , Montreal , Born Sherbrooke, P.Q., March 26, 1878 , son of John Calder and Marie Louise Delphine Calder. Educated: St. Mary's College; Laval University; Nova Scotia Normal; McGill University (B.A., B.C.L.). Read Law with Donald MacMaster, K.C.; called to the Quebec Bar, July, 1906; Editor, Canadian Century, from I909-11, to which contributed pen sketches of politicians under title of "Verbal Cartoons." Started present business Nov. 1, 1920. Defeated, Centre Ward, Montreal City Council, 1914; St. Lawrence District, Montreal, Legislature, 1919. Leading cases: Defended, Ross, Malo, Fletcher, the Seybold Brothers, Girgados, Beauregard, all accused of murder, none were convicted. Prosecuted: Dunn, the Ste Thérèse Island Counterfeiting Gang, who were convicted. On the Civil side, especially prominent in labour injunction cases for the defence. Appointed Crown Prosecutor for the District of Montreal, 1923. Commissioned as 2nd Lieut., 64th Militia Bttn., in 1897, served continuously till 1912, when retired with rank of Captain. Appointed to C.E.F., as Lieutenant, 69th Can. Infantry, 1915; transferred to 41st Can. Infantry as Captain; on going overseas promoted to Major. Acting Second-in-Command of 150th Battn. in Fifth Division; reverted to Captain to proceed to front. Posted to 13th Royal Highlanders, in France . Wounded and awarded M.C., at Amiens, Aug. 8, 1918; returned to France Oct. 10th. Commanded "D" Company, through October advance to Armistice and in march to Armistice Frontier. Staff of M.D. No. 4, till Sept. 1, 1920. Married May Lillian Lamont, daughter of Donald Lamont, Nov. 28, 1906 ; has two daughters. Catholic. Residence: 126 Durocher St., Montreal.
