Robert Gillespie

Gillespie, Robert (1785-1863), merchant, was born in Scotland in 1785, a younger brother of George Gillespie. He came to Canada about the year 1800; and ultimately became a partner in the firm of Gillespie, Moffatt and Co. He returned to England in 1822; and was until 1856 at the head of the English branch of Gillespie, Moffatt and Co. He died in 1863. He married (1) Anna Agnes, daughter of Dr. Robert Kerr, formerly surgeon of Sir John Johnson's "Royal Greens", by whom he had at least one son, Sir Robert Gillespie (1818-1901); and (2) Caroline Matilda (d. 1879), second daughter of Dr. Daniel Arnoldi, of Montreal.
