René de Bréhaut de Galinée
Galinée, René de Bréhaut de (d. 1678), priest and explorer, was a native of Brittany. He came to Canada as a Sulpician missionary in 1668, and in the following year was sent with Dollier de Casson and La Salle to try to reach the Mississippi and pave the way for Sulpician missions among the western tribes. The party left Montreal on July 6, 1669, and the two priests having been abandoned by La Salle, spent the winter on the northern shore of lake Erie, where they took possession of the country in the name of Louis XIV. Owing to various misfortunes they gave up the attempt to reach the Mississippi, and having visited Sault Ste. Marie, returned to Montreal in the spring of 1670. Galinée made a map of the Great lakes, and wrote a Récit de voyage de MM. Dollier et Galinée (1669-1670). He died in 1678. Source : W.
