Pierre Méru Panet

 

Panet, Pierre Méru (1731-1804), executive councillor of Lower Canada, was born in Paris, France, in 1731, the fourth child of Jean Nicolas Panet and Marie Françoise Foucher, and brother of Jean Claude Panet. He joined his brother in Quebec in 1746, and in 1754 he was appointed royal notary for Montreal. In 1761 he was named clerk of the court of captains of militia in Montreal, during the period of military rule; and in 1768 he became a notary public and barrister in Montreal. In 1778 he succeeded his brother as a judge of the court of common pleas for Quebec, and he sat on the bench until his retirement in 1784. In 1791 he was appointed a member of the executive council of Lower Canada ; and he died at Montreal on June 15, 1804. In 1754 he married Marie Anne Trefflé Rottot; and by her he had seventeen children. See P. G. Roy, La famille Panet (Lévis, 1906).
