Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye
La Vérendrye, Pierre Gaultier de (1714-1755), fur-trader and soldier, was born at Sorel, Canada, on December 26, 1714, the second son of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Vérendrye. He accompanied his father to the West in 1731; and in 1741 he founded Fort Dauphin, on lake Dauphin. After his father's return to Montreal in 1743, he remained in the West until 1749. He then returned to Canada and obtained a commission in the army as an ensign of foot. He died at Quebec on September 13, 1755. See Abbé I.
