Philippe Panet

Panet, Philippe (1791-1855), judge, was born at Quebec on February 28, 1791, the second son of the Hon. Jean Antoine Panet. He served in the Canadian Voltigeurs during the War of 1812, and was present at the battle of Châteauguay. In 1817 he was called to the bar of Lower Canada; and from 1816 to 1824 and from 1830 to 1832 he represented Northumberland in the Legislative Assembly of the province. In 1831 he was appointed by Lord Aylmer a member of the executive council of Lower Canada; and in 1832 he was gazetted a judge of the court of King's Bench for the district of Quebec. In 1838 he was suspended from the bench by Sir John Colborne; but he resumed his seat in 1840, and continued to occupy a seat on the bench until his death at Quebec on January 15, 1855. In 1819 he married Marie Luce, daughter of Pierre Casgrain; and by her he had twelve children. See P. G. Roy, La famille Panet (Lévis, 1906).
