Philéas Gagnon

Gagnon, Philéas (1854-1915), bibliographer, was born at Quebec in 1854, the son of Charles Gagnon and Hortense Caron. He was for many years a merchant in Quebec, and sat in the city council. He made a collection of Canadiana, superior probably to any other private collection, which he sold in 1910 to the city of Montreal. Of this he issued an annotated catalogue, under the title Essai de bibliographie canadienne ( Quebec, 1895); and a second and supplementary volume was issued later by the city of Montreal under the same title ( Montreal, 1913). He was the author also of Québec il y a cent ans (Quebec, 1909). He died at Quebec on March 25, 1915.
