Narcisse Henri Édouard Faucher de Saint-Maurice

 

Faucher de Saint-Maurice, Narcisse Henri Edouard (1844-1897), author, was born at Quebec, Lower Canada, on April 18, 1844, the son of Narcisse Constantin Faucher de Saint-Maurice, seigneur of Beaumont and Vincennes, and Catherine Henriette Mercier. He was educated at the Quebec Seminary; and in 1864 he took service, as a captain of sharpshooters, in the army of the Emperor Maximilian in Mexico. He served throughout the Mexican war, was twice wounded, and returned to Canada in 1866. From 1867 to 1881 he was clerk of the Legislative Council of Quebec; and in 1883 he became the editor-in-chief of the J ournal de Québec, and in 1885 of Le Canadien. From 1881 to 1890 he represented Bellechasse in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. He published a large number of books. His first publications were military: L'ennemi! L'ennemi! Étude sur l'organisation militaire du Canada (Quebec, 1862), and Cours de tactique (Quebec, 1863). After his return from Mexico he published successively De Québec à Mexico: Souvenirs de voyage (2 vols., Montreal, 1874), A la brunante: Contes et récits (Montreal, 1874), Choses et autres (Montreal, 1874), De tribord à babord (Montreal, 1877), A la veillée (Quebec, 1878), Deux ans au Mexique (Montreal, 1878), Procédure parlementaire (Montreal, 1885), En route (Quebec, 1888), Joies et tristesses de la mer (Montreal, 1888), Loin du pays (2 vols., Quebec, 1889), Notes pour servir à l'histoire de I'Empereur Maximilien (Quebec, 1889), La question du jour: Resterons-nous français? (Quebec, 1890), Honi soit qui mal y pense (Montreal, 1892), Notes pour servir à l'histoire du Général Richard Montgomery (Montreal, 1893), Les états de Jersey et la langue française (Montreal, 1893), Notes pour servir à l'histoire des officiers de la marine et de l'armée française, qui ont fait la guerre de l'indépendance américaine (Quebec, 1896), and Promenades dans le golfe St.-Laurent (2 vols., Montreal, n.d.). He was a charter member of the Royal Society of Canada, and to its transactions he contributed a number of papers, mostly on historical subjects. He died in April, 1897. In 1868 he married Josephine Berthelot d'Artigny, niece of Sir Louis H. Lafontaine. In 1881 he was created by the French government a chevalier of the Legion of Honour. See L. H.
