Narcisse-Eutrope Dionne

Dionne, Narcisse Eutrope (1848-1917), historian and bibliographer, was born at St. Denis de la Bouteillerie, Lower Canada, on May 18, 1848, the son of Narcisse Dionne and Elizabeth Bouchard. He was educated at Laval University (M.B., 1872; M.D., 1874; Lit.D., 1900), and he practised medicine from 1873 to 1880. In 1880 he became editor of the Courrier du Canada, and in 1892 he was appointed librarian of the Quebec Legislative Library. He died at Quebec on March 30, 1917. For thirty-five years he was a voluminous contributor to Canadian historical literature. He published, among other works, Le tombeau de Champlain (Quebec, 1880), Jacques Cartier (Quebec, 1889), La Nouvelle France de Cartier à Champlain (Quebec, 1891), Samuel Champlain (2 vols., Quebec, 1891-1906), Vie de C. F. Painchaud (Quebec, 1894), Mgr. de Forbin-Janson (Quebec, 1895), Les ecclésiastiques et les royalistes français refugiés au Canada (Quebec, 1905), Champlain (Toronto, 1906), Le parler populaire des Canadiens-Français (Quebec, 1909), Pierre Bédard et ses fils (Quebec, 1909), Chouart et Radisson (Quebec, . 1910), Gabriel Richard (Quebec, 1911), Une dispute grammaticale en 1842 (Quebec, 1912), La "Petite Hermine" de Jacques Cartier et diverses monographies historiques (Quebec, 1913), Les Canadiens français: Origine des familles (Quebec, 1914), and in collaboration with A. G. Doughty, Quebec under two flags (Quebec, 1903). But his most important work was his Inventaire chronologique (4 vols., Quebec, 1905-9) of books, pamphlets, maps, and periodicals published in and about the province of Quebec, a bibliography such as no other province in Canada possesses.
