Marc Amable Girard

Girard, Marc Amable (1822-1892), prime minister of Manitoba (1874), was born at Varennes, Lower Canada, on April 25, 1822, and was educated at the College of St. Hyacinthe. He became a notary public; and in 1871 he was called to the bar of Manitoba. He went to Manitoba in 1870 with Archbishop Taché and Joseph Royal; and he represented St. Boniface in the Legislative Assembly of the province from 1870 to 1878 and from 1879 to 1883. From 1870 to 1872 he was provincial treasurer of Manitoba ; from July to December, 1874, he was prime minister of the province; and from 1879 to 1883 he was a member of the Norquay government, first as provincial secretary, and then as minister of agriculture. In 1871, on the entrance of Manitoba into the Dominion, he was called to the Senate of Canada; and in 1872 he was appointed senior member of the council of the North West Territories. He died at St. Boniface, Manitoba, on September 12, 1892. In 1878 he married Aurélie Lamothe, widow of Alfred Versailles, Montreal.
