Luke Foxe
Foxe, Luke (1586-1635), explorer, was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, on October 20, 1586, the son of a master mariner; and he became himself a master mariner. In 1631, he made an important voyage to Hudson bay, and explored the west coast of the bay so thoroughly that it became clear the north-west passage did not lie in that direction. He published an account of his voyage under the title Northwest Fox (London, 1635) ; and shortly afterwards he died at Whitby , Yorkshire , on or about July 15, 1635. See M. Christy, The voyages of Captain Luke Foxe of Hull and Captain. Thomas James of Bristol in search of a north-west passage (2 vols., London , Hakluyt Society, 1894). Source : W.
