Louis Philippe Mariauchau d'Esglis

Esglis, Louis Philippe Mariauchau d' (1710-1788), eighth bishop of Quebec, was born in Quebec in 1710, the second son of François Mariauchau d'Esglis, an officer of the Dauphiné regiment who came to Canada in 1689. He was ordained a priest in 1734, and became curé of St. Pierre, on the island of Orleans. In 1770 he became coadjutor of Bishop Briand, and in 1772 he was appointed bishop of Dorylaeum in partibus. On the retirement of Briand in 1784, he became bishop of Quebec, being the first native-born Canadian to wear the mitre. He died at St. Pierre, on the island of Orleans, on June 4, 1788. See P. G.
