Lawrence Ermatinger

Ermatinger, Lawrence (d. 1789), fur-trader, was a Swiss merchant who appears to have made his way from London to Canada in the early days of British rule. An Ermatinger child (Ann Mary) was born in Montreal in 1766. In 1770 Lawrence Ermatinger was declared a bankrupt in London ; but he evidently succeeded in re-establishing himself in Canada, for his name appears in the fur-trade licences as trading to Grand Portage between 1779 and 1783. He died in Montreal on October 6, 1789. He married Jemima Oakes (d. 1809), the sister of Forrest Oakes; and by her he had several children.
