Joseph Denis
Denis, Joseph (1657-1736), priest, was born at Three Rivers, Canada, on November 7, 1657, the son of Pierre Denis and Catherine Le Neuf. His baptismal name was Jacques, but later in life he took the religious name of Joseph. He was the first native-born Canadian to enter the Récollet order, and he was ordained a priest at Paris, France, in 1682. He served at Gaspé, in Newfoundland, at Montreal, Quebec, and Three Rivers, at Louisbourg, and finally at Quebec. He died at Quebec on January 25, 1736. See R. P.
