Joseph Armitage Ewing, K.C.

Of Ewing & McFadden, Solicitors, 205 St. James Street, Montreal. Born Eastern Townships, son of John and Mary (Armitage) Ewing. Educated: St. Francis College, Richmond; McGill University (B.C.L., 1897). Solicitor, Sun Life Assurance Co., Ltd. Clerk in the office of the Assistant Superintendent of the Traffic Dept., G.T.R., 1890-1892; began studying law under the Hon. Henry Aylmer, 1892; entered the office of Atwater & Mackie, 1894; entered McGill University Law Faculty, 1894; graduated with honors, 1897; called to the Bar, Jan., 1898; created K.C., 1909; began practice with the Hon. Henry Aylmer, 1898, and later same year entered into partnership with the late George B. Cramp, K.C., Montreal; in 1910, Mr. G. S. McFadden joined them. After Mr. Cramp's death in 1913, the firm became known as Ewing & McFadden. Assistant Author of W. J. White's treatise, Canadian Company Law. Interested in Boy Scouts since its inception in Canada; Member, Executive of the Canadian General Council; Commissioner for the Province of Quebec. Served with Montreal Heavy Brigade of Artillery as Lieutenant in 1899, and advanced through various stages; commanded First Battery for some years with rank of Major; is on the Corps Reserve of the Brigade with that rank. Married: Henrietta Margaret Smith, daughter of Henry Smith, Oct., 1906. Clubs: Royal Montreal Golf; Reform; Canadian; Rotary; University. Societies: St. James' Literary; A.F. & A.M. Recreation: Golf. Unionist. Methodist. Residence: 271 Prince Arthur Street W., Montreal.
