John Soughton Dennis

 

DENNIS, Colonel John Stoughton, C.M.G., M.E.I.C., F.R.C.S., D.T.S. - Chief Commissioner, C.P.R., Montreal. Born Toronto, Ont., Oct. 22, 1856, son of John S. and Maria (Oliver) Dennis. Educated: Upper Canada College ; Military School, Kingston. Engaged on Dominion Government Surveys, Western Canada, 1872-79; Surveyor to Hudson's Bay Co.'s Land Dept., 1877-82; Private practice as Surveyor and Engineer, Winnipeg, 1882-85; Chief Inspector of Surveys for Dominion Government, 1885-96. Chief Engineer and Deputy Commissioner of Public Works, Northwest Territories Government, 1896-1902; Supt. of Irrigation and British Columbia Land Commissioner, C.P.R., 1902; later Asst. to the 2nd Vice-President; Asst. to the President, 1910-14; present position since 1914; Vice-President, American Society of Irrigation Engineers; ex-President; Canadian Society Civil Engineers. Colonel, Reserve Officers. Active Service, 1885, 1916-18; Medals: C.M.G., Northwest 1885, Great War (2), Serbian Cross; Married Mary Conroy, Quebec, 1879; has one daughter. Clubs: Mount Royal , United Services, and Westerners', Montreal ; Ranchmen's, Calgary. Conservative. Anglican. Residence: 386 Sherbrooke Street W., Montreal.
