John McDonald of Garth

 

McDonald of Garth, John (1774?-1860), fur-trader, was born in Scotland about 1774, and came to Canada, in the service of the North West Company, in 1791. From this date until 1816 he served almost continuously in the western country; and in 1813 he received the surrender of Fort Astoria. In 1816 he settled at Gray's Creek, Glengarry, Canada ; and here he died in 1860. He left several children. His "Autobiographical notes" have been published in L. R. Masson, Les bourgeois de la compagnie du Nord Ouest, vol. ii (Quebec, 1890).
