John Fraser

(1820-1899)

Fraser, John (1820-1899), author, was born at Lachine, Lower Canada, on May 20, 1820, the younger brother of Hugh Fraser. He was for a time in partnership with his brother Hugh in the wine business; but retired from the partnership, and later lost his money. He was chiefly instrumental in trying to upset his brother's will, establishing the Fraser Institute, Montreal; and his failure to do so somewhat embittered his later years. He died on the family farm at Lachine on October 12, 1899. In 1857 he married Eliza Malcolm, the headmistress of a girls' school in Montreal ; and by her he had one daughter. He was the author of Canadian pen and ink sketches (Montreal, 1890).
