John Alexander Gemmill

Gemmill, John Alexander (1847-1905), lawyer and author, was born at Ramsay, Lanark county, Canada West, on March 20, 1847. He was educated at Glasgow University, and was called to the bar in Ontario in 1871 (Q.C., 1896). He practised law, first in Almonte, and then in Ottawa. In 1881 he became the proprietor and editor of the Canadian parliamentary companion. He died at Ottawa on November 7, 1905. In 1883 he married Emily Helen, daughter of the Hon. Alexander Walker Ogilvie. He was the author of The practice of the parliament of Canada upon bills of divorce (Toronto, 1889), and The Ogilvies of Montreal (Montreal, 1904).
