Jean Charles Chapais
CHAPAIS, Jean Charles, LL.B., D.Sc.A. - Advocate and Farmer. Born St. Denis de la Bouteillerie, County Kamouraska, Que., March 6, 1850, son of Hon. Senator Jean Charles and Georgina (Dionne) Chapais. Educated: College of Ste Anne de la Pocatière; Laval University (LL.B., 1875). Called to Quebec Bar, 1875; practised two years; has since devoted his time to agriculture; was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Agriculture by Quebec Laval University, June 9, 1916, and presented with an honorary diploma by the Quebec Macdonald College of Agriculture on Feb. 15th, 1917; Winner of the Very Great Special Merit of the Order of the Agricultural Merit, of the Provincial Government of Quebec, April, 1922; Associate Editor, Official Journal of Agriculture of Province of Quebec, 1879-1890; Assistant Dairy Commissioner, Canada, since 1890; Federal Assistant, Agricultural Commissioner for carrying out the provisions of the Agricultural Instruction Act in the Province of Quebec, since 1913; Agricultural lecturer in all French sections of the Dominion since 1879; Collaborator and correspondent, French and English Agricultural Press during last forty-three years; Secretary, first Quebec Forestry Association; Director, Vice-President and President, Pomological and Fruit Growing Society of Province of Quebec; Director, many years, and Vice-President, Quebec Dairymen's Association. Author, Book on Forestry, The Canadian Forester's Illustrated Guide in French, 1883, in English, 1885; and of twenty-three booklets on Agricultural and Historical Subjects, bound in one book entitled Une Gerbe de Glanures . Married Henriette Michaud, daughter of Alexis Thomas Michaud, M.D., 1876; has one son and one daughter. Roman Catholic. Address: St. Denis de la Bouteillerie, Kamouraska Co., P.Q.
