James Vincent Cleary

Cleary, James Vincent (1828-1898), Roman Catholic archbishop of Kingston, was born in Dungarvan, Waterford, Ireland, on September 18, 1828. He studied theology at Rome, at the Royal College, Maynooth, Ireland, and at the University of Salamanca, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1851. In 1854 he became a professor of theology in St. John's College, Waterford (D.D., 1862); and from 1873 to 1876 he was its president. In 1880 he was appointed bishop of Kingston, in Canada ; and he came to Canada in 1881. In 1889, Kingston having been made the metropolitan see of a new ecclesiastical   province, he was raised to the dignity of archbishop. In 1896 he was instrumental in re-opening Regiopolis College ; and his episcopate was notable in other ways. He died on February 24, 1898.
