James Ellice

Ellice, James (d. 1787), merchant, was a younger brother of Alexander Ellice who was left in Schenectady in charge of the affairs of Phyn, Ellice and Company in 1775, after the headquarters of the firm were transferred to London. After suffering "heavy suspicion" and "close confinement", he was allowed to take the oath of allegiance to the State of New York in 1779. He remained for several years in charge of the declining affairs of the Schenectady office of the firm, until his death in Montreal, on October 15, 1787. For further details, see R. H. Fleming, Phyn, Ellice and Company of Schenectady (Contributions to Canadian Economics, 1932).
