Chisholm, three years; with Crane & Baird, Grain dealers, - partner, ten years; formed Norris & Carruthers, which remained in force ten years; later, organized firm of James Carruthers & Co., Ltd., with offices in Montreal, New York and Winnipeg. Member, Montreal Board of Trade; member, Chicago Board of Trade; member, Toronto Board of Trade; member, Montreal Corn Exchange; member, Winnipeg Grain Exchange; member,. New York Produce Exchange; member, Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce; Director, Montreal Jockey Club; Governor, Montreal Gen'l. JAMES CARRUTHERS was born at Toronto, Canada, August 13th, 1853, a son of Andrew and Janet Carruthers, natives of Dumfrieshire, Scotland. He was educated in the schools of Toronto and at an early age entered the office of T. C. Chisholm of Toronto (the largest grain dealer in Canada at that time). He remained there three years and then took a position in the office of Crane & Baird, grain dealers, became a partner in the business and remained with them about ten years. He then formed the grain firm of Norris & Carruthers, which remained in force for about ten years, and later the present firm of Jas. Carruthers & Co., Ltd., with offices in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, and they do a large export business in grain, being one of the largest houses in the dominion of Canada. James Carruthers is president of Jas. Carruthers & Co., Limited, Richelieu & Ontario Navigation Co., Hiram L. Piper Co., Limited, Montreal & Lake Erie Steamship Co., Pacific Coast Collieries, Limited, Canadian Marble & Granite Works Co., Limited, B. C., vice-president Canada Securities Corporation, Limited, Canadian Fish & Cold Storage Co., Prince Rupert, B. C., director Dominion Bank, St. Lawrence & Chicago Steam Navigation Co., Montreal Jockey Club, Niagara Navigation Co., Northern Navigation Co., Inland Navigation Co., Thousand Island Steamboat Co., St. Lawrence River Steamboat Co., member Montreal Board of Trade, Montreal Corn Exchange, Winnipeg Grain Exchange, New York Produce Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade, Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, Toronto Board of Trade and is a governor of the Montreal General Hospital and the Western Hospital. He is a member of the following clubs: United Empire, London, England; Mount Royal, St. James, Montreal Jockey, Montreal Hunt and Country Clubs of Montreal, National, Toronto Hunt, Ontario Jockey Clubs of Toronto and Edmonton Club of Edmonton.
Mr. Carruthers was married at Toronto in 1875 to Louise Coleman and they have had three children, George Andrew Carruthers and William Carruthers, and James Edgar Carruthers, the latter deceased.
