Georges Barthélemi Faribault

Faribault , Georges Barthélemi (1789-1866), bibliographer, was born at Quebec on December 3, 1789 . He was called to the bar of Lower Canada in 1810, but in 1822 entered the civil service of the province. In 1840 he was appointed assistant clerk of the Legislative Assembly, and this post he occupied until his retirement on pension in 1855. He twice made for the Assembly a collection of books and papers relating to Canadian history; but the first collection was wholly destroyed in the burning of the Parliament Buildings at Montreal in 1849, and the second partially destroyed in the burning of the government offices at Quebec in 1854. He died at Quebec on December 21, 1866. His Catalogue d'ouvrages sur l'histoire de l'Amérique, et en particulier sur celle du Canada (Quebec, 1837) is the first essay in Canadian bibliography. See H. R. Casgrain, Faribault (Quebec, 1867), and La famille Faribault (Bull. rech. hist., 1912).
