François Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes

Vincennes , François Marie Bissot, Sieur de (1700-1736), soldier, was born in Montreal, Canada , on June 17, 1700, the son of Jean Baptiste Bissot de Vincennes, an army officer, and Marguerite Forestier. In 1718 he joined his father as a cadet among the Miami ' Indians; south of lake Erie; and in 1733, having been promoted in 1730 to the rank of lieutenant, he was made commandant in the Wabash country. He re-established Fort Vincennes, which was named after him, and he has been described as "the founder of Indiana". He was burnt at the stake by the Chicacha Indians in the Wabash country on March 25, 1736. See P. G. Roy, Le Sieur de Vincennes, fondateur de l'Indiana, et sa famille (Quebec, 1919).
