François Cazeau
Cazeau, Francois (1734-1815), merchant, was born at Angoulême, France, in 1734, and came to Canada before the British conquest. He became a merchant in Montreal, and during the American invasion of 1775 he supplied the Continental troops with provisions. He was arrested by Haldimand, on the charge of having assisted the enemy, and imprisoned. About 1785 he went to Paris to try to collect some of his debts; and he died in Paris, after a long illness, shortly after April, 1815. He appear to have been twice married, (1) in 1759 to Marguerite, daughter of Pierre Vallée and (2) later to a daughter of John Reeves, of Montreal. See B. Sulte, François Cazeau, and A. Fauteux, François Cazeau (Bull. rech. hist., 1916). Source : W. Stewart WALLACE, ed., The Encyclopedia of Canada, Vol. II, Toronto, University Associates of Canada, 1948, 411p., p. 17.
