Fort Norman
Fort Norman, a North West Company post on the right bank of the Mackenzie river, at the mouth of Bear river. It was built in 1810, and was taken over by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. In 1844 it was moved about 35 miles upstream to a site a few miles below Gravel river, on what is known as Old Fort point, near the site of a former post of the North West Company, called Fort Castor. In 1851 it was moved back to its old site, which it still occupies. In 1920 Fort Norman became the centre of great activity through the discovery of oil in the neighbourhood. See G. Pendleton, Fort Norman (Beaver, 1932). Source : W. Stewart WALLACE, ed., The Encyclopedia of Canada, Vol. II, Toronto, University Associates of Canada, 1948, 411p., p. 373.
