Fort Duquesne, a French fort built at the confluence of the Alleghany and Ohio rivers. It was begun by governor Dinwiddie of Virginia in 1753, but was captured by the French before it was completed, and was strengthened by them. In attempting to recapture it, Braddock was defeated in 1755; but it was recovered by the British in 1758, and was renamed Fort Pitt. It was rebuilt in 1761, and was attacked by Pontiac in 1763, but the attack was repulsed.
