Fort Albany
Fort Albany, a Hudson's Bay Company post on the south shore of Albany island, at the mouth of Albany river. It was built in 1683-4, was captured by the French in 1686 (when it was renamed Fort Ste. Anne), was retaken by the English in 1689, by the French in 1692, by the English in 1693, by the French in 1695, and was finally surrendered to the English in 1696. It was the only fort held by the Hudson's Bay Company from the Treaty of Ryswck in 1697 to the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713; and it has been operated continuously by the Hudson's Bay Company from 1696 to the present.
