Emmanuel Crespel
Crespel, Emmanuel (1703?-1775), missionary and author, was born at Douai, Flanders, about 1703. He became a Récollet, and was sent to Canada in 1724. He was ordained a priest in 1726, and he served at Sorel, at Niagara, at Cataraqui, and with a mission to the Wisconsin country. He returned to France in 1738, after having been shipwrecked in 1736 on Anticosti ; but he came back to Canada in 1752, and he died at Quebec on April 28, 1775. He was the author of a volume entitled Voyages (Frankfort-on-Main, 1742; 2nd ed., Amsterdam, 1757; 3rd ed., with biography, Quebec, 1884) ; and this was translated into English, under the title Crespel's Travels in North America (London, 1797; new ed., New York, 1908).
