Edward Frederick Clarke

 

Clarke, Edward Frederick (1850-1905), journalist and politician, was born at Bailieboro', county Cavan, Ireland, on April 24, 1850, the son of Richard Clarke and Ellen Reynolds. He came to Canada in 1864, was apprenticed as a printer, and became a journalist. In 1877 he was selected as editor of the Toronto Sentinel, the organ of the Orange Association; and in 1887 he became deputy grand master of the Orange Association in British America. From 1888 to 1891 he was mayor of Toronto. He sat in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1886 to 1894; and in 1896 he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons for West Toronto as an independent Conservative, pledged to support D'Alton McCarthy, and to oppose separate schools in Manitoba. This constituency he represented in parliament until his death in Toronto on March 3, 1905. In 1884 he married Charlotte Elizabeth Scott, of Toronto ; and by her he had two daughters.
