Edward Ermatinger

Ermatinger, Edward (1797-1876), fur-trader and author, was born on the island of Elba , in the Mediterranean sea , in February, 1797, the son of Lawrence Edward Ermatinger, who was the eldest son of Lawrence Ermatinger. His father was employed in the commissariat of the British Army, under the patronage of his relative, Sir Hildebrand Oakes (see Dict. Nat. Biog.). Edward Ermatinger was educated in England , and in 1818 he was, with his brother Francis apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company. He remained in the service of the Company for ten years; but in 1830 he retired from the fur-trade, and settled at St. Thomas, Upper Canada. There he died in 1876. He was the author of a Life of Colonel Talbot (St. Thomas, C.W., 1859) ; and his York Factory express journal has been edited by his son, judge C. O. Ermatinger (Trans. Roy. Soc. Can., 1912).
