Edward Chapman
Chapman, Edward (1821-1904), geologist, was born in Kent, England, in 1821, and was educated in France and Germany. He became a civil engineer, and from 1850 to 1853 was professor of mineralogy in University College, London . In 1853 he came to Canada as professor of mineralogy and geology in University College, Toronto ; and he resigned this post only in 1898. He then returned to England ; and he died at Hampton Wick, near London, on January 28, 1904. He was a Ph.D. of Göttingen University (1862) and an LL.D. of Queen's University, Kingston (1867); and in 1883 he became a charter member of the Royal Society of Canada. Besides many books and papers on geology and mineralogy, he was the author of a volume of poetry, A song of charity (Toronto, 1857; 2nd ed., London, 1858).
