Eastmain River

Eastmain river, a large stream in Quebec, forming the boundary between the district of Mistassini and the territory of New Quebec. It has a length of 375 miles, and flows westward into James bay. At its mouth it is ½ miles wide; and three miles above its mouth is one of the oldest Hudson's Bay Company posts, founded in 1685. About 25 miles from its mouth the river separates into two branches equally important; and it is frequently interrupted by rapids and falls, one of the falls being 120 feet high. The river is also known by the French as "la Grande Rivière de l'Est"; and it was formerly known by the names Hudson, Canuse, and Slade.
