Dr. Bernardo's Homes

Dr. Barnardo's Homes, centres established in Canada for the reception of child immigrants sent from England under the scheme established in 1867 by an English philanthropist, Dr. Thomas John Barnardo. During the years 1885 to 1925 the Barnardo Society brought to Canada over 28,000 children, of whom two-thirds were under 14 years of age; but regulations adopted by the Canadian government in 1925, placing restrictions on the immigration of children under 14 years of age, except when accompanied by parents, brought about the virtual discontinuance of the work of the Barnardo Homes in Canada.
