Désiré Girouard
Girouard, Désiré (1836-1911), judge, was born at St. Timothée, Lower Canada, on July 7, 1836, the son of Jérémie Girouard and Hypolite Picard. He was educated at Montreal College and at McGill University (B.C.L., 1860; D.C.L., 1874); and was called to the bar in 1860 (Q.C., 1880). From 1878 to 1895 he represented Jacques Cartier in the Canadian House of Commons as a Conservative. In 1895 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada; and he occupied this post until his death at Ottawa on March 22, 1911. He was thrice married, (1) in 1862 to Marie Matilde (d. 1863), daughter of John Pratt, of Montreal, (2,) in 1865 to Essie (d. 1879), daughter of Dr. Joseph Cranwill, of Ballynamoney, Ireland, and (3) in 1881 to Edith Bertha, daughter of Dr. John Beaty, of Cobourg, Ontario. Apart from a number of legal treatises, he published Lake St. Louis , old and new (Montreal, 1893), Supplement to "Lake St. Louis" (Montreal, 1903), and several works on the history of the Girouard family.
