Daniel Claus
Claus, Daniel (1727-1787), deputy superintendent of Indian affairs, was born in Germany in 1727, and emigrated to America in 1748. He became attached as an interpreter to the Indian Department under Sir William Johnson, and in 1760 was appointed deputy superintendent of the Canadian Indians. He held this position throughout the American revolution, and his property in New York was confiscated. On the declaration of peace he went to England to attempt to obtain compensation; and he died at Cardiff, Wales, in the latter part of 1787. In 1762 he married Ann ( Nancy ), daughter of Sir William Johnson, Bart. She died at Niagara, Upper Canada, in 1801. Source : W.
