Charles Oakes Ermatinger
Ermatinger, Charles Oakes (1780?-1853), fur-trader, was born about 1780, a son of Lawrence Ermatinger and Jemima Oakes (d. 1809), a sister of Forrest Oakes. He became an Indian trader, and lived for many years at Sault Ste. Marie. In 1805 he was admitted a partner of the North West Company, to begin with the outfit of 1808; and he acted as an agent of the North West Company at Sault Ste. Marie for several years. His later days were spent on the island of Montreal , where he bought a property at Elmwood, Long Point; and there he died on September 4, [1833]. He married an Indian woman, named [Mananawe Katawabidai], who died at Philipsburgh on July 9, 1850, aged 65 years; and by her he had three sons, Charles Oakes, William and James, and four daughters, Frances, Jemima, Jane, and Ann. His eldest son, Capt. Charles Oakes Ermatinger, died at Montreal on January [09], 1857, aged 55 years. Source : W.
