Chagouamigon

Chagouamigon, a trading-post at the south-western extremity of lake Superior, on a long projecting cape called La Pointe or Grande Pointe. The first post here was built by Radisson and Groseilliers in 1661, near a settlement made by Hurons and Ottawa, driven hither by the Iroquois about 1650, and not far from the present town of Ashland, Wisconsin. The post was revived in 1692, on Magdalen island, and continued in operation till the British conquest. After the conquest, it was an important stopping-place for traders following the south shore of lake Superior, and for a time the North West Company had a post there. See R. G.
