Battle of Eccles Hill
Eccles Hill, Battle of, an engagement which took place on May 25, 1870, between a force of about 800 Fenians, under "General" O'Neil, and a body of Canadian militia and volunteers. The Fenians crossed the border between Vermont and the Eastern Townships at a place known as Eccles Hill or Cook's Mills, and after some desultory fighting retreated in confusion.
