Aymar de Chatte

Chatte, Aymar de (d. 1603), lieutenant-general of New France (1602-3), was a younger son of François de Clermont, baron de Chatte, and Paule de Joyeuse. He entered the order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1566, and rose in this order to the rank of marshal. In 1589 he was appointed governor of Dieppe ; and in 1602 he was commissioned as lieutenant-general of New France, having organized a company for trade in Canada. He died in May, 1603. See R.
