Armand François Marie de Charbonnel
Charbonnel, Armand François Marie de (1802-1891), Roman Catholic bishop of Toronto, was born at the Château of Flachats, near Monistrol-sur-Loire, in the department of HauteLoire, France, on December 1, 1802. He joined the Sulpician order in 1825, and was ordained a priest in 1826. In 1839 he came to America, and was in Montreal from 1840 to 1847. In 1850 he was consecrated bishop of Toronto. He founded St. Michael's College in Toronto, and he brought about the division of his diocese into the diocese of Toronto and Hamilton, in 1855. In 1860 he retired from his see, and was made archbishop of Sozopolis. He returned to France, and there he died in retirement at Crest, near Valence, on March 25, 1891. Source : W.
