Anthony Von Iffland

Von Iffland, Anthony (d. 1876), physician, was born in Quebec, at the end of the eighteenth century, of German and French parentage. He was educated at the High School in Quebec, and studied medicine in London, Edinburgh, and Paris. On his return to Canada, he founded in 1820 at Quebec the first anatomical school in Canada ; but was compelled to give up his practice in Quebec because of the rousing of public feeling against his anatomical studies. He occupied various medical positions in the public service of Quebec ; but he retired from practice in 1867, and became commissary of the Marine Hospital in Quebec. He died in 1876. He was a voluminous writer; and a bibliography of his papers and articles is to be found in H. J. Morgan, Bibliotheca canadensis (Ottawa, 1867).
