Alphonse Desjardins

Desjardins, Alphonse (1854-1920), journalist and reporter, was born at Lévis, Lower Canada, on November 5, 1854, and became a journalist. From 1879 to 1890 he published, at his own risk, the debates of the legislature of Quebec; and from 1892 to 1917 he was an official reporter of the debates in the House of Commons at Ottawa. In his later days he interested himself in the foundation of popular banks (caisses populaires); and he died at Lévis, Quebec, on October 31, 1920. He was created by the Pope a commander of the order of St. Gregory.
