Alfred Garneau

Garneau, Alfred (1836-1904), poet was born in Quebec, Lower Canada, on December 20, 1836, the eldest son of Francois-Xavier Garneau. He was educated at the Quebec Seminary, and was called to the bar in 1860. In 1861 he entered the civil service of Canada, and in 1873 he was appointed chief French translator to the Senate of Canada, a position which he occupied until his death at Ottawa in 1904. In his youth he contributed some striking verse to Le Foyer Canadien (1863-6), and other periodicals; and he published a fourth edition of his father's Histoire du Canada, with a memoir of the author by P. J. O. Chauveau.
