Louis Philippe Adélard Langevin

Langevin, Louis Philippe Adélard (1855-1915), Roman Catholic archbishop of St. Boniface (1895-1915), was born at St. Isidore, Quebec, on August 23, 1855, the son of François Théophile Langevin and Mary Pamela Racicot. He was educated at the Jesuit College in Montreal, and in 1881 joined the Oblate order. He was ordained a priest in 1882. From 1885 to 1893 he was a professor of theology in Ottawa University ; and in 1893 he went to Manitoba, at the invitation of Archbishop Taché, and became rector of St. Mary's Church, Winnipeg. In 1895 he was elected archbishop of St. Boniface, in succession to Archbishop Taché, and he took a prominent part in the controversy over separate schools in Manitoba. He administered the archdiocese for twenty years, and he died at Montreal on June 16, 1915. In 1892 he received the degree of D.D. from the Vatican. See Rev. A. G. Morice, Vie de Mgr.
